Emergency lighting is an essential part of any buildings fire safety strategy. It plays an important role in illuminating escape routes in the event of an emergency where power is lost or sight is severely reduced e.g. in a fire. Like all fire safety measures, it’s a legal requirement to ensure that your Emergency Lighting is tested regularly to ensure it is in full working order and ready should an emergency happen. OCD-FM’s qualified engineers can provide Emergency Lighting Testing to buildings of all types and work within commercial, industrial and educational settings across the Midlands and South East of England.
OCD Fire Management Solutions (OCD FM) provide both annual full duration tests (as described in BS 5266-1) and monthly ‘flick’ testing for our clients. Regardless of system type (i.e. whether your building has maintained emergency lighting or non-maintained), our experienced engineers will perform 1 hour or 3 hour testing to ensure all luminaires are damage free and working correctly.
All clients will receive a comprehensive site survey to assess the Emergency Lighting system in place, so we can provide a detailed schedule of works to ensure you stay compliant all year round.
If conducting monthly ‘flick tests’, our engineers will perform a short functional test, simulating the failure of the mains power supply. As the minimum allowed duration for an emergency escape lighting system is 1 hour, this is typically how long this test takes.
A full annual test (as described in BS 5266-1) requires a test of 3 hours duration and should be carried out by a fire safety professional. A 3 hour test is how long an emergency lighting system should stay illuminated in the event of an emergency (depending on the batteries in place). So our engineers will switch off your primary lighting circuit and test that your Emergency Lighting System stays lit with all luminaires fulling functional for this entire duration.
Emergency Lighting System are typically powered by rechargeable batteries. These self charge from the mains power. So if the power is turned off, we can test that the batteries are also in good working order. As a result of the test, any defective bulbs, batteries and emergency light fittings will be noted and highlighted for immediate remediation. Our engineers carry the majority of these spares in their vehicles so can affect these repairs at the time of testing.
If not in place, we can provide a map highlighting the position and identification of each Emergency Light throughout your building. This log book is then used by our engineers to note down all testing and any remedials highlighted. It will also include date of repairs.
We will follow all relevant health and safety guidelines and regulations during the testing process. The client must provide safe and unrestricted access to all areas being tested and identify any potential hazards or risks associated with the areas we may be working in.
We will take appropriate measures to minimise any environmental impact of the testing process. The client is responsible for ensuring that any necessary permits or permissions are in place for the work being carried out.
The client must provide any necessary keys or access codes to gain entry to the building or areas affected by the testing process.
Our testing work may cause some disruption to your operations, especially as we will need to cut the mains power for up to 3 hours. We always aim to keep these disruptions to a minimum and work with the upmost professionalism but it may be more convenient for you to arrange and out of hours test. Speak to our friendly team to arrange this.
We will conduct any Emergency Lighting Testing in compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, including Fire Safety Order 2005 and BS 5266-1.
We will treat all information obtained during Emergency Lighting Testing within your building as confidential and will not disclose it to any third parties without the client’s written consent, except where required by law.
